Below the escarpment, the urban part of the city runs on Halton's Lake Ontario supply at around 140 mg/L. That is the hardest of the lake-fed Halton municipalities, though still far short of what groundwater areas see, and it is a straightforward softening case.
Above the escarpment, rural north Burlington is largely on private wells, and that is a materially different problem. Hardness can run at multiple times the municipal figure, and groundwater in this part of Halton commonly carries iron and sulphur alongside it. A softener on its own is the wrong purchase there — not merely insufficient, but actively compromised, because iron fouls softener resin permanently. Sediment comes out first, then iron and sulphur, then hardness, then ultraviolet disinfection last on water that is already clear.
If you are on a well above the escarpment, the number that matters is not Burlington's municipal figure. It is whatever a lab says about your own well, which is why we sample before we quote rather than after.
