The older parts of town and the surrounding well-fed areas run on groundwater at something closer to 350 — more than twice as hard, inside the same municipality, sometimes only a few streets apart. Neighbours comparing notes over a fence will genuinely disagree about their own water and both be correct.
This is also the place where getting it wrong is most expensive. A softener sized for lake water and installed at a well-fed address will regenerate almost continuously, burn through salt, and still fail to keep up. Worse, groundwater iron will quietly destroy resin that was never specified to handle it, so the system degrades from the day it is commissioned rather than failing honestly at the start.
