Vaughan's water arrives from a considerable distance. York Region does not front onto Lake Ontario, so most of the city is served by the York Water System — treated lake water bought from Peel Region and the City of Toronto and pumped north — arriving at around 128 mg/L. That journey matters less for hardness, which does not change in transit, than for the fact that Vaughan households sit near the end of a long distribution system, where taste and chlorine residual come up more often than scale does.
Kleinburg is the exception, and it is worth knowing if you live there. It is on a separate system blending Lake Ontario surface water with groundwater, and it runs a little harder at about 133 mg/L. The gap is small, but it means Kleinburg is not on the same supply as the rest of Vaughan and general advice for the city is not automatically advice for that address.
What is distinctly Vaughan otherwise is the pace and type of construction. Woodbridge, Maple and the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre have added an enormous volume of housing inside a short window, and almost all of it was built with high-efficiency or tankless water heating rather than a conventional tank. Those are the systems that register scale first and least forgivingly — which is why a disproportionate share of what we are called out to here is a tankless unit throwing a fault rather than a kettle furring up.
